Hello,

It's Tuesday and it's time for a newsletter!

update

It's been 5 days since I arrived in Bucharest, Romania, a city I have spent a great deal of time in over the years. So it definitely feels good to be back and to quickly get in a groove due to the familiarity factor.

Each day I pick a new cafe to work from for a few hours. Tucano Coffee is still my favorite because it is by far the friendliest, most welcoming cafe chain in this city. At many other cafes, you're lucky if you get a 'hello' :)

Then in the evenings I meet up with friends for some food, a beer and a chat at one of the city's infinite terraces (bars/restaurants/cafes with large outdoor seating areas). Last night I went to Legere. The night before was Grand Cafe Van Gogh.

On Saturday I discovered that one of the main avenues through the city - Calea Victoriei - actually closes down to vehicle traffic for the weekend and becomes a pedestrian only street. Thousands of people walked up and down the 3 kilometer stretch of road lined with cafes, gelato shops, craft beer bars, street performers and more.

It was such an excellent atmosphere and I wish more cities would do something similar. It's like having an open-air festival in the heart of town every single weekend, during the summer.

Apart from that, I'm also making the final preparations for my Wandering Earl Romania tour that starts next week.

It's been a good amount of time since I've been able to run a tour so I cannot tell you how excited I am to travel around a good part of this country with the group that is coming!
where in the world
It's time to use your travel knowledge and research skills!

Where in the world

There were actually no correct guesses for last week's photo. While a lot of people did guess the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica, this photo is actually of...

Concepcion Volcano on the Island of Ometepe, in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, in Nicaragua.

The closest guess came from Elisabeth who did correctly guess the island, so congratulations for getting so very close!

It was many years ago when I visited Isla de Ometepe, a very quiet, beautiful island, which is made up of two volcanos. It was an off-the-beaten-path destination then, with just a few simple guesthouses, empty beaches, crystal clear natural pools and springs, plenty of jungle to hike around and a unique local culture. From my quick research now, it seems like it's still relatively off the main travelers route.

And now...

Where in the world?

This week's photo

Where in the world is it?

The Rules

1. Try to figure out where the above photo was taken.
2. Reply to this email with your guess.
3. The more specific the guess, the better!
4. The location will be revealed in next week's newsletter.

Good luck :)

A History of Digital Nomads
My friend James from NomadicNotes.com put together a very extensive history of digital nomads (I even get a mention!). Surprisingly, the concept might date back to 1964 and Arthur C. Clarke.

Noodles
This has nothing to do with travel but this automatic noodle making machine is pretty slick!

A Great Quote
I've repeated this quote daily since I saw it for the first time: "You can't wait until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy." - Jane Marczewski

World's Best Airports 2021
It comes as no surprise to me that the top spot in the 2021 Skytrax World's Best Airports rankings goes to Hamad International Airport in Qatar. I was just telling someone last week about how efficient and smooth it is to travel through this airport. Overall, airports in Asia claimed 7 of the top 10 spots.

An Indian Village Saves a Bird
This is a very heartwarming tale of a small Indian village that voluntarily turned off their electricity for an entire month in order to protect one bird's nest.

World's Highest Hotel
In Shanghai, you can now find the highest hotel in the world, located in the second tallest building on the planet.

The Pencil Shop of Iran
Mr. Rafieh's mesmerizing pencil shop inside of an indoor market in Tehran, Iran, is a true masterpiece in itself.

That's Very Narrow
Prague's narrowest street has a traffic light to prevent pedestrians from getting wedged in the lane. And Yanjin, China is the world's narrowest city, at only 30 meters wide in some places.

Creating Electricity With No Effort
One young man in Sierra Leone, Jeremiah Thoronka, invented a device that creates free electricity with no effort at all. The device is placed under a road and the vibrations from pedestrian and vehicle traffic lead to an electric current that can supply electricity to an impressively large area.
