A Life of Travel

Hello,

It's Tuesday and it's time for a travel newsletter!
update

We've now been in Tbilisi, Georgia for several days. And our time here has consisted of three very simple activities:

1. EATING GEORGIAN FOOD

It began with dinner at the underground Salobie Bia on the night we arrived. Then it was brunch at the cheerful, family-run Chaduna and dinner with our friends Niall and Rita at the atmospheric Keto and Kote. We did some khinkali tasting at the well-known Cafe Daphna and had a great lunch at the cozy Cafe Linville.

As for dishes, well, I am happy to add nigvzinai badrijani (eggplant rolls with walnut and pomegranate), pkhali (spinach and walnut dip), ajapsandali (eggplant stew with tomato), khinkali (dumplings) and the ever-so-yummy khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) to my list of excellent food I've tried around the world!

Here's a deeper look at wonderful Georgian cuisine.

2. DRINKING GEORGIAN WINE

We're still getting the hang of it, but Georgian wine is known for its unique and ancient method of production and grape varieties. Some wines are made using terra-cotta pots that are buried underground to store and ferment the grape juice. We've tried mostly red wines - 8000 Vintages wine bar was an excellent place to start - based on the recommendations of locals and they've all been quite good. We plan to do a proper wine tasting one of these days to learn more.

3. WANDERING EVERYWHERE

Every day we hit the streets...by foot. One day we went left and the other we went right. Yesterday we walked across the Saarbrucken Bridge to the other side of the river. With impressive architecture, hidden courtyards, local markets, hillside neighborhoods, historic quarters, quaint lanes and tree-lined avenues... tiny Tbilisi is ideal for simply wandering around without a plan!

We still have several more days in this city before we hire a car and head off towards the wine region of Telavi and the mountains around Kazbegi. It's not fully planned yet but we're getting there.

All Things Travel

Elevator Buttons
While this might not be the first thing travelers to Japan think of visiting, I would definitely include a tour of this elevator button factory. I'm no longer a kid, but getting a chance to press 1,000 different elevator buttons still sounds like a blast!

Travel Apps
Here's a very simple chart that shows the Top 10 travel apps that are downloaded on iPhones in a handful of countries.

Wedged in a Bridge
In Southern China, one resident absolutely refused to move when the government wanted to build a bridge. So they built the bridge around her small home instead.

The Pano Awards
The winning images in this nature-based photography contest depict the surreal beauty of our awesome planet.

My Favorite Bags
Last week, a couple of people asked me what company I recommend for carry-on backpacks/messenger bags. And I still totally recommend Timbuk2. My own Timbuk2 messenger bag looks brand new despite being 6 years old and having accompanied me to over 30 countries!

The Remote Region of Agrafa
There lies in Greece a region so remote that invaders would always leave it alone. Today, some locals are trying to put Agrafa on the map in order to benefit from off-the-beaten-path tourism.

Airline News
One European airline is dropping the mask requirements on flights between certain destinations. And these four airlines earned more revenue last year from upsells than they did from ticket sales.

where in the world

The location of last week's photo proved to be tricky as there were no correct guesses...

The location is Erbil, Iraq. This city in northern Iraq is the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan and is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

When I was waiting to board my flight from Istanbul to Tbilisi the other day, I saw that there were two flights about to take off to Erbil. It gave me flashbacks of my time there (back in 2010 - here's a glimpse of that trip) and I'd love a chance to visit again.

And now...
